Product Description

Do you want to unleash the full power of your smartphone and reduce or eliminate the need to carry a laptop? REDFLY has you covered. REDFLY links to your smartphone via a USB cable or wireless Bluetooth connection and extends the Windows Mobile interface to a more convenient and capable environment.

What is REDFLY?

REDFLY is a smartphone terminal with a large screen and full keyboard with no OS, no CPU, and no storage that lets you use your smartphone like a laptop. REDFLY links to your smartphone via a USB cable or wireless Bluetooth connection.

Easily do email, read attachments, view web sites, and use applications that reside on your smartphone with 8 hours of battery life.

REDFLY gives you anytime, anywhere full-screen access to Web 2.0 and line of business applications that reside on your company network or the Internet.

Since the unique REDFLY terminal architecture has no OS, CPU or storage, it lowers TCO, provides data loss protection, and improves corporate security.

REDFLY is unlike any sub-compact laptop, netbook, UMPC or the Palm Foleo because it has no CPU, memory or OS. There’s no need to sync with a smartphone or manage the REDFLY in any way. Just install the OTA driver on your phone, connect to REDFLY and you see your smartphone in a whole new way.

What Can You Do With REDFLY?

  • Thanks to REDFLY’s large screen and full keyboard, you can use your smartphone more and your laptop less. Most people don’t take full advantage of their smartphone’s high-speed data connection, powerful hardware and robust applications due to the limitations of smartphones’ tiny screens and cumbersome keyboards.
  • REDFLY unleashes your smartphone making it easy to type long emails, check attachments, work with spreadsheets, make presentations, view websites, fully utilize CRM applications and connect to remote servers, desktops and applications from anywhere using your smartphone’s data connection.
  • Use REDFLY’s two USB ports to connect a mouse, charge your smartphone directly from REDFLY’s powerful battery, or access data on USB Flash drives.
  • Need an easy way to make presentations on the road without a laptop? REDFLY has you covered. Just plug a projector or large monitor into REDFLY’s VGA port and use PowerPoint Mobile to run the presentation.
  • Have you ever tried to look up a contact, respond to a text message, forward an email or just get work done while having a mobile phone conversation at the same time? With REDFLY, you can use both hands on its large screen and full keyboard to fully access your smartphone and get the job done while talking to someone on your smartphone.

StarStarStarStarStar RedFly Review
User: Chester Wojna, Nov 29, 2008
Pros: Small, Light, Long Battery, Good for Emails, Accepts Mouse
Cons: Slow Screen Refresh, Some Applications do not Work
Overall, I like the unit and I will keep it and use it. I look at this unit kind of I look at IPTV. It has its growing pains but once fully developed it will be a great must have system. I nthe meantime I will deal with the growing pains sine it has more advantages than disadvantages. I can check email one a big screen with a proper keyboard and browse the internet with an external mouse without having to carry a big laptop. The battery last for ever! I like this too.

Below you will find my review of the RedFly unit and a list of the program that run good and also a list of the programs that do not run at all. I also must say that some of the programs that do not run have disappointed me for two reasons. The first is that one of the the main reason to get the using was for email and browsing. Email works good but the PIE (Pocket Internet Explorer) is not a very efficient browser (it has some limitation), and the other two browsers I have installed in my device (Opera 9.5 and SkyFire) do not work at all. The second reason is that some applications I use do not run with the RedFly, and I was not expecting this. The RedFly website has a list of programs certified to run with the RedFly unit so you should check this list. I did not checked it.

One other thing that disappointed me is that I purchased the RedFly unit from HTC Depot as being the latest thing - and once I received it I noticed that my model number is obsolete and does not exists any more. My model number is not even lusted in the RedFly Website. My Model number is C8, and the RedFly Website has the Model Number C7 and C8N. My unit is like in between of the C7 and C8N but is not listed on the RedFly Website.

I am running Windows Mobile 6.1 on an HTC Tytn II (Kaiser). I am running a cooked version of the ROM that I like, and although there are some UI applications that do not display properly, I feel this is "par for the course" since I would not expect RedFly to test all the hundreds of cooked ROMs out there.

The driver installed with no problem in my mobile device and it installs only into main memory. It does not give the option to install to the storage card. The driver did not take that much memory which is good - although I feel that the screen refresh slowed down a little in my device after I installed the driver. I can not tell for sure but it is a perception.

As for the RedFly unit - it connects to the mobile very quick hassle free with both The USB cord and the BlueTooth. Once connectivity is established the unit works well. It even includes two USB ports where you can connect Flash- Drives and an external mouse for instance. I notices that the wheel scroll work fine when using a corded mouse but could not make the scroll wheel work on a cordless mouse. I assume because you are not installing specific drivers. I also assume that this may be manufacturer and model dependent. The unit als oincludes a VGA port for presentations (have not tested yet)

My only complaint about he unit is that the screen refresh is very slow. You need to have a lot of patience. A few improvement for the unit that I would welcome would be a pair of integrated speakers instead of relying on the phone tiny speaker. Another item much welcome would be connection for headphones so that you do not have to connect headphones to the mobile unit. Actually, if the RedFly unit had speakers and headphones connectivity, then when connecting BluTooth you will have everything you need from the RedFly unit and you can leave your phone tugged away in the case or in your pocket.

For the Browsing experience, PIE works good for the most part. However, for a good browsing experience and to take advantage of the larger screen, three things are missing. The first one is a search. PIE does not have a search to search the current page and I use search a lot. Having a search (Ctrl-F) is a must. The second is the ability to have TABS. PIE does not have TAB browsing and the other two Browsers I have installed in my Mobile device do not work with RedFly (Opera 9.5 and SkyFire). The third one is the ability to "trick" the web server. What I mean is that the web server detects the mobile browser and it immediately serves the mobile version for a small screen and no graphics. In many instances I want to get the real thing and there is no way to "trick" the service to get the real web page.

One fairly Big disadvantages I found is that some of my common used application do not work with the RedFly unit. I assume mainly because the application can not handle the higher resolution and crashes.
Below you will find the programs I have testes in my device and which ones are working and which ones are not.
